Order chai in Marathi 01 Order chai in Marathi Chai Basics · 4 sentences

you will order chai in Marathi before your tea goes cold.

The bit nobody warns you about

You know the words. You still freeze at the chai stall.

600

words learned

A normal flashcard streak. Then the auto driver asks one question and none of them come out. Words are not sentences.

3 sec

before you switch to English

The pause is the whole problem. People are kind and answer in English, so you never get the practice.

Marathi courses on the big apps

Duolingo has 40 languages. Marathi is not one of them, and 83 million people speak it.

How it works

Three steps. Five free minutes a day.

01

Pick a scene

A scene is one whole conversation. Buying chai. Haggling for tomatoes. Telling the auto driver where to stop.

02

Build the sentence

An English hint and a handful of Marathi words. Tap them into the right order. Wrong order, and it tells you why.

03

Hear the reply

The other person answers back in Marathi, out loud. That reply is the next thing you learn to understand.

Whole sentences

Sentences from lesson one, not word lists.

Every task is a whole sentence said to a whole person. Marathi word order gets into your hands early, so the verb landing last stops feeling strange.

Knowing 300 words is not speaking. Saying 300 sentences is.

English order

Give me one tea

Marathi order

मला एक चहा द्या

to-me · one · tea · give

the verb waits until the end

When you slip up

No wrong answers. Just a friend correcting you.

No red cross. The AI reads what you actually said and explains it like the person next to you at the stall: the word you reached for, the word you wanted, and a sentence that would have worked.

Still confused? One tap opens ChatGPT with your sentence already typed in.

Nobody quits because it was hard. They quit because nobody told them why.

You said घ्या (take) - use आहे (is) instead.

You said: चहा गरम घ्या

Try: चहा गरम आहे

Progress that stacks

Old words keep coming back on purpose.

Scenes unlock in order, and each one reuses words you already earned. By the vegetable market you are not learning किती again - you are using it.

Scene 24 does not replace scene 1. It stands on it.

06 Chai Basics 18 words
11 Asking Directions 9 new, 14 back
19 Market Bargain 7 new, 31 back
24 Vegetable Market 6 new, 44 back

fig. — word reuse across four scenes

Still confused?

One tap, and ChatGPT breaks it down word by word.

No confusion carried into the next lesson.

The app's sentence is correct:

तुला टोमॅटो खरेदी करायचे आहेत का?

"Do you want to buy tomatoes?"

Your sentence, तुला टोमॅटो खरेदी, is incomplete. It has no verb and no question marker.

Word by word

  • तुला = to you
  • टोमॅटो = tomatoes
  • खरेदी करायचे = want to purchase
  • आहेत = are
  • का? = marks a yes-or-no question

How these lessons were built

Built on what worked for other people. Not on guesses.

Before writing lesson one, I read 49 threads by adults who actually learned a second language, and built the course around what they said made the difference.

49

threads read first

We asked people who already did it

34 Hacker News threads and 15 Reddit posts from r/languagelearning and r/marathi, by adults who actually got fluent. The lessons came after that reading.

#1

method they all named

You learn by understanding, not drilling

Comprehensible input came up more than everything else combined: meet Marathi you can almost follow, and let your brain close the gap. Every scene sits just past what you know.

single-word flashcards

Sentences stick, word lists slide off

The one thing experienced learners agreed on: whole sentences, never lone words. So every task is a sentence you could actually say, with the reply attached.

Why this exists

I have lived in Pune for 6 years, but I could not speak a word of Marathi. Then my daughter was born here. This is her home now, so I want it to feel like my home too - and that starts with learning the language people around us speak. Every app I tried taught single words with pictures, which is useless when a chai seller asks you something at speed. So I made what I wanted: real scenes, whole sentences, and the reply you will actually hear back. It costs me real money and time to run - AI to check your answers, AI to make the pictures, and many hours of coding. I keep it free anyway. I love this place - the weather, the people, the whole vibe - and this is my way of giving something back.

Questions people ask

Free Marathi lessons, questions answered plainly.

Why is it free?
Because it started as a way to teach Marathi to my own family, and running it costs very little. There is no paid tier, no trial clock, no card and no ads - all lessons, all sentence tasks and all the audio are free, with new lessons added daily. You do not have to take my word for it: the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Do one lesson and see if anything asks you for money.
How can I learn Marathi fast?
Learn whole sentences for one situation at a time, not lists of words. Pick what you will actually say tomorrow - ordering chai, asking a price, greeting a neighbour - and say it out loud until it is automatic. That is why every lesson here is a scene. Start with ordering chai.
Is Marathi hard to learn for English speakers?
The sounds are easy and the sentences are short, so speaking comes quickly. The hard parts are the word order (the verb goes last: मला चहा द्या is literally "to-me tea give") and the respectful verb forms you use with elders. Reading Devanagari is a separate skill you can skip at the start.
How do you say hello in Marathi?
नमस्कार (namaskar) works everywhere, any time of day, with anyone. It is more respectful than the casual हाय. Fold your hands slightly as you say it and you will get a smile. Practise greetings in a real conversation.
How do you say thank you in Marathi?
धन्यवाद (dhanyavaad) is the standard thank you. In everyday speech most people just say "thank you" in English, or express it by tone. A common reply back to you is काही नाही - "it is nothing".
What is the best free app to learn Marathi?
Most big language apps do not offer Marathi at all, and the ones that do teach single words with pictures. Marathi Lessons is built only for Marathi, teaches full sentences from lesson one, and is 100% free with no card and no ads.
How many Marathi words do I need to hold a conversation?
About 300 words covers most daily situations - shops, autos, directions, family, small talk. This site currently teaches 308 words across 159 sentence tasks. The trick is that a small set of words recombines into hundreds of real sentences.
How do I say "how much does this cost" in Marathi?
किती रुपये झाले? (kiti rupaye jhaale) - "how many rupees came to?" For a shop item you can also say याची किंमत किती? - "what is the price of this?" Practise the whole bargaining scene.
Do I need to learn the Devanagari script to speak Marathi?
No. Speaking and reading are separate skills, and you can hold real conversations without reading a single letter. We show Devanagari next to every word anyway, so the script soaks in slowly while you learn to talk.
What is the difference between Marathi and Hindi?
They share the Devanagari script and a lot of vocabulary, so Hindi speakers get a head start. But the verb endings, pronouns and honorifics differ enough that Hindi will not carry you through a Marathi conversation. Marathi also uses a neuter gender that Hindi does not.
How do I learn Marathi for daily conversation in Pune or Mumbai?
Learn the six situations you repeat every day: chai, auto, shop, directions, greetings, and small talk about the weather. Those six carry most of your week. Start with the auto-rickshaw scene.
How long does it take to learn Marathi?
For simple daily conversation, a few months of short daily practice is realistic. Five focused minutes a day beats a two-hour session on Sunday, because sentences stick through repetition, not through study time.
How do I say my name in Marathi?
माझं नाव ... आहे (maajha naav ... aahe) - "my name is ...". To ask back, say तुमचे नाव काय? - "what is your name?" Practise introducing yourself.
What is the best way for an adult to learn Marathi?
Meet Marathi you can almost understand and let your brain close the gap - what learners call comprehensible input. It came up more than every other method combined across the 49 Hacker News and Reddit threads this course was built from. Second rule: whole sentences, never lone words.
Are these Marathi lessons really 100% free?
Yes - 100% free, all lessons, all sentence tasks and all the audio, with new lessons added daily. There is no paid tier, no trial clock, no credits and no card. You only sign in so your progress is saved.
How do you say yes and no in Marathi?
हो (ho) is yes and नाही (naahi) is no. To be polite when refusing, add नको (nako) - "not wanted" - which is softer than a flat no when someone offers you food or chai.
What does this site not teach?
It teaches you to speak and understand everyday spoken Marathi - that is the whole job. It does not teach reading/writing drills or grammar tables, there is no live teacher or certificate, and there is no streak that guilts you with notifications. If you need one of those instead, better you know now.
What happens when I get a Marathi sentence wrong?
Nothing punishing - no red cross, no score. The AI explains it like a friend: the word you reached for, the word you wanted, and a sentence that would have worked. For deeper grammar, one tap opens ChatGPT with your sentence already typed in.
Is there Marathi audio so I can hear the pronunciation?
Yes. Every word and every reply can be played out loud, so you hear the sentence before you say it. Tap the word to hear it on its own, or the reply to hear it at natural speed.
What does this site not teach?
No reading and writing drills, no grammar tables, no live tutor, and no certificate. It teaches you to say and understand spoken sentences in everyday situations. If you need formal grammar or exam prep, this is not the right tool.
Do I have to pay later, or will there be ads?
No and no. There is no paywall waiting at lesson six and no ad slot anywhere on the site. If anything ever changes, the lessons you have already done stay free.
Do I need an account to start?
You sign in once so your progress and your word list are saved between visits. There is no card, no plan to pick and nothing to cancel. Start your first lesson.
